From a talk given to the European Coffee Symposium in Vienna by Dr Peter Griffiths. Although about coffee many of the same arguments can be made in cacao.

Fairtrade does very little for farmers in the Third World/developing nations/Global South. It kills some. But it is very good for Western Business.
A compelling presentation about some of the shortcomings of institutionalized Fairtrade and an argument for the kinds of direct-trade alternatives that many small chocolate makers pursue. I can personally attest about the lack of documentation surrounding the monies that actually make their way to farmers.
