Episode 58 Overview
Twice a year, since before I dipped my toe in the waters of my ChocolateLife, the Specialty Food Association has been hosting Fancy Food Shows (FFS) twice a year. The Winter show was traditionally in San Francisco but recently moved to Las Vegas. The Summer show has been in NYC at the Javits Center since my first visit in 2001.
The 2001 show was when I first met Gary Guittard as well as Frederick Schilling, founder of Dagoba.
I visited all but one or two Summer shows between 2001 and 2019 and about ten Winter shows. Since COVID lockdowns began, I have visited just one FFS – the Summer 2022 edition.
While my personal interest and focus have always been chocolate, of course, my long and regular history attending FFSs gave me an interesting opportunity to observe flavor and other trends as well as formulate a methodology for how I traversed the shows. (These were techniques I picked up during my tech career, having participated in or attended every SIGGRAPH from 1984 (in Minneapolis) – 1998 (Orlando).)
I did not visit the Winter FFS in Las Vegas this year because I went to Nigeria in January and I did not attend the Summer FFS this year because I am currently based in Central Arizona, not in the NYC metro area, and I did not have a client picking up the tab.
But, ChocolateLife contributor Keith Ayoob, who does live in NYC did visit the Summer FFS and he will share with us some of the highlights he found – and not just chocolate.

The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals
What should we have for dinner? Ten years ago, Michael Pollan confronted us with this seemingly simple question and, with The Omnivore’s Dilemma, his brilliant and eye-opening exploration of our food choices, demonstrated that how we answer it today may determine not only our health but our survival as a species. In the years since, Pollan’s revolutionary examination has changed the way Americans think about food.
