Overview - Episode 176
At times, TheChocolateLife and PodSaveChocolate have to delve into geopolitical topics. In this episode, my guest is Jorge Redmond, who currently helms Chocolates El Rey, the iconic Venezuelan chocolate brand.
In its over 100-year history, Chocolates El Rey has been an important part of Venezuelan chocolate and cocoa, both at home and abroad.
The focus of the discussion will be the impact of recent and historical geopolitical maneuvering that has affected, and continues to affect, the chocolate and cocoa markets in Venezuela and internationally.

My first encounter with single-origin chocolate (not El Rey, Bonnat) made with Venezuelan beans was in 1994, with beans from Chuao and Puerto Cabello. My encounter with those bars was a part of what inspired me to become a chocolate critic. So Venezuelan cacao is an important part of my ChocolateLife.
I have been fortunate to meet Jorge at many events in the US and in Europe over the past twenty-plus years, but I did not visit the El Rey factory when I was in Venezuela in 2006.
Like many people, I was not a fan of industrial white chocolate made with deodorized cocoa butter. Tasting El Rey’s ICOA opened my eyes to what white chocolate could be – more than just milky, sweet fat – ICOA tastes of cocoa.
