Episode 70 Overview
The first Salon du Chocolat in New York (then called the NY Chocolate Show) was held at The Puck Building (at the corner of Lafayette and Houston in SoHo) in 1998. I know, because I was among hundreds of people who stood in line for hours in the rain waiting for the doors to open on the first day.
I had started seriously researching chocolate in 1996 and this was my first opportunity to meet famous chocolatiers in person and taste their work. I was also introduced to the organizers, Sylvie Douce and François Jeantet.
From 1998 through 2013 The NY Chocolate Show was the chocolate show in North America, and from 2001 through 2013 I was involved in every show in some way – as an advisor, speaker, member of the press, and once as an exhibitor. I have lost track of the people I first met at this show.
2013 was the year of Hurricane Sandy, which wreaked havoc on exhibitor participation and attendance. The show returned – successfully – in 2019, but COVID delayed and then canceled the show in 2020.
For 9 of the past 27 years, New York City – arguably one of the most important markets for chocolate in the US – has not experienced a Salon du Chocolat event, the most iconic and influential international brand in chocolate exhibitions globally.
So, 2024 marks a kind of “re-re-debut” of the show to chocolate professionals and chocolate-loving New Yorkers as the show is under new ownership and management.
This episode of #PodSaveChocolate will present plans for this year’s show with an emphasis on exhibitors – what the show represents and what the opportunities are. Interview guests include organizing staff, show advisors, and exhibitors.
If you have considered exhibiting and have not yet made up your mind this is an opportunity to get your questions answered – and more.
