Episode 66 Overview

Our lives depend on supply chains, the web of connections that products from their source to the final consumer. Global commerce depends on their working effectively and efficiently.

But, what are supply chains, really?

Knowing that a supply chain traces the route that something travels from where it is made to where it is used – and who handled the product along the way – tells you nothing about how supply chains operate. Today even simple supply chains rely on database and communications infrastructure, not just transportation infrastructure.

In this episode of #PodSaveChocolate we’re going to examine what makes up a supply chain – paying special attention to supply chains in cocoa and chocolate.

What IS a supply chain?

Supply chains are comprised of the links that connect the source of goods between producers and consumers. A better visualization is supply web as truly independent chains are rare.

What SHOULD a supply chain facilitate?

First and foremost, a supply chain should facilitate business between trading partners.

What IS Traceability?

Documenting the chain of custody from the source to a particular endpoint.

What IS Transparency?

Visibility into the movement of goods from the source. This includes what, who, how, when, and for how much,

WHAT is the hardest part of traceability in cocoa?

Getting reliable data into a verifiable system at the farm gate. This is called the first-mile problem.

Other Traceability challenges.

Interoperability
The difference between data veracity and data integrity

What are some important Traceability standards?

Supply Web opportunities NOT to be overlooked.

New types of markets and contracts
New forms of signalling
Modernizing post-harvest processing
Eliminating smuggling and counterfeiting
