Episode 60 Overview

I try very hard to get my facts right in every post. But recently I was approached by the author of a script for a TedEd video complaining about the tone of voice I used (“snarky”) to refer to what I saw as factual mistakes in a video on the history of chocolate.

A correspondence ensued during which I offered to review the video and submit what I thought the mistakes were. I offered to update the post if I were provided with primary source citations that showed that I was mistaken.

After I started this post and before publishing it I ran into another instance where I relied on my memory – which turned out to be completely wrong – around the coining of the portmanteau “intertwingled.” It is on that topic that I will begin this episode as an object lesson of just how porous memory can be and why it’s important to fact-check yourself and be open to admitting mistakes.

As I say in my update to the Can You Trust the Internet for Chocolate Information? post (below), in my review of the TedEd video I don’t remember, at four years remove, everything I originally found at issue in the video. There are three main topics I thought worth pursuing – the inventor of the cocoa butter press, the inventor of powdered milk, and the very related question of who invented milk chocolate.

The Importance of Fact-Checking
It’s impossible to know everything there is to know about cocoa and chocolate. And, much as I want to know everything and strive to be factually accurate, sometimes I get things not quite right, if not outright wrong. Prompted by a member, in this post I fact-check another of my posts.

My response.

The OP.

The history of chocolate
If you can’t imagine life without chocolate, you’re lucky you weren’t born before the 16th century. Until then, chocolate only existed as a bitter, foamy drink in Mesoamerica. So how did we get from a bitter beverage to the chocolate bars of today? Deanna Pucciarelli traces the fascinating and often cruel history of chocolate.
