Ending Exploitation in Cocoa
An interactive overview of the Tony's Open Chain 2023/24 impact report, showcasing a scalable model for a more ethical cocoa supply chain.
Our Model: The 5 Sourcing Principles
At the core of Tony's Open Chain is a set of five interconnected principles that target the root causes of exploitation in the cocoa industry. Click on a principle to learn more.
Our Impact Dashboard
Financial Impact: Paying a Higher Price
Tony's Open Chain ensures farmers receive a Living Income Reference Price (LIRP), which is significantly higher than the standard farmgate or even the Fairtrade price. This chart shows the price composition for the 2023/24 main season in Côte d'Ivoire.
Social Impact: Fighting Child Labour
The Child Labour Monitoring and Remediation System (CLMRS) is key to identifying and addressing child labor. In 2023/24, the system achieved near-universal coverage of farmer households.
Environmental Impact: Halting Deforestation
With 100% of farms GPS-mapped, satellite monitoring ensures cocoa is not sourced from protected forests. The results show an exceptionally high rate of compliance.
Poverty Reduction: Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI)
The MPI measures poverty across health, education, and living standards. This chart shows the percentage of households in Tony's Open Chain deprived in key areas, highlighting ongoing challenges and areas for focus. A household is considered MPI poor if deprived in at least one-third of the weighted indicators.
Our Partners: The Mission Allies
Change requires collaboration. These Mission Allies have committed to sourcing their cocoa through Tony's Open Chain, driving the model to scale.
Sourcing Volumes by Partner (2023/24)
This chart illustrates the volume of cocoa beans (in metric tons) sourced by each partner, demonstrating the collective power of the coalition.
The Tech Powering the Change
A sophisticated, integrated technology stack is essential for providing the transparency, traceability, and data needed to make our 5 Principles a reality.
