This is the first time I will set foot on the island of Manhattan since late March 2023, a week before I headed west. (I may have connected through JFK, but never left the airport.)
I am going to NYC for professional and personal reasons. I will be attending the Salon du Chocolat, meeting with consulting clients, and visiting family. I left two days unscheduled so I could visit some of my old Manhattan chocolate haunts, and discover some new ones.
I lived in the NY metro area for most of the 40 years before heading west. The New York I left in 2023 was very different from the New York I knew in April 2020 and very different from the NYC I encountered from the fifth-floor walkup on Ninth Ave between 48th and 49th streets that was my first apartment after moving from Providence in 1983.
In this episode I will be sharing what I hope to accomplish while I am in NYC – connecting with new friends and reconnecting with old friends at the Salon and then where I plan to be going on my “free” days. What it feels like to be back in the city I called home.
It has been years since I’ve seen Jaques Torres, Bryan & Dahlia from Fruition, Tuta from Baianí, Tanya from Villakuyaya, and Mona from Amore di Mona in person. There are some chocolate brands I am not familiar with at all along with NY chocolate icons like Li-Lac, and brands I know from other shows, including Wiseman House from Dallas.
What are the NYC chocolate experiences – in 2025 – I should not miss?
Rule #1 – Do Your Homework Before You Head Out
Three lists with many overlapping recommendations – at least one entry is way out of date. If all you knew about the best chocolate in NYwas from these lists, you’d have some amazing experiences – but there are many missing pieces.
There was no post for the fourth leg, from Santa Fe through Albuquerque to Flagstaff via Amtrak and, after an overnight stay at a hotel on Route 66, taking a shuttle bus to Camp Verde where I was picked up by a colleague for the last leg to Prescott.
