Episode Overview
In this episode of #TheChocolateLifeLIVE, I am going to continue my exploration of language – how the words we use inform our beliefs, how our beliefs inform our actions, and how our actions have consequences.
In past episodes, I have focused on specific words and concepts – including “What does Sustainability mean?” “What does Ethical mean?” And “What is Quality?”
In this episode, I will be examining entries in the Fine Chocolate Industry Association’s Fine Chocolate Glossary.

I will not only be looking at some of the definitions/explanations presented, but I will also be taking a look at how the glossary is constructed from a technical perspective. Spoiler Alert: Before I transitioned to chocolate, I had extensive professional experience in database technology development (I am a named inventor on four patents in this area), information management, full-text retrieval, browse/search UI/UX development, and related topics.
Your homework, in advance of the live stream, is to browse the glossary and select one or more entries to review/critique. Imagine that the platform is a wiki (i.e., each of the entries is on a cocoa- and chocolate-specific version of Wikipedia) and you can directly suggest edits.
- What do you like about the entry/ies you chose?;
- Where do you think it falls short?;
- Are there sufficient, credible, external, references cited?;
- Are there words and concepts you think are missing?;
- What is the user experience like?; and
- Anything else you want to comment on about your experiences.
I have my ideas (and I will share them) ... but I want to hear from you.
I will share and respond to your comments in the live stream. If you have a friend or colleague with an interest in cocoa and/or chocolate, is a fan of language, has a professional interest and/or experience in #lexicon (e.g., #dictionary, #index, #glossary, #encyclopedia, etc) creation, and/or has technical experience in constructing searching and browsing UI/UX – then please share this post with them.
