One of the challenges with cocoa and chocolate is that the answer to many questions begins, “It depends on ...” The question of whether or not it’s possible to reduce the efforts of chocolate companies large and small to a simple score has a lot of “It depends ...” dependencies.
Some of those depends include:
- It depends on what the goal is.
- It depends on what you are measuring.
- It depends on how you are measuring.
- It depends on the information gathering process.
- It depends on the biases and backgrounds of the researchers and the biases and backgrounds of the organizations they belong.
- It depends on how the results are presented.
- And, it depends on what results are presented.

The Goals
One goal of projects like this are to serve as proxies for consumers and others to do their own research. This is because doing the research is difficult and time consuming. Many of the companies are private and to get the information requires access that most of us – including me – don’t have.
Consumers are eager for logos they can look at that tell them the products they buy are ethical, sustainable, and maybe some other traits. This means that another goal of projects like this are to give consumers confidence they are making good, informed, purchasing decisions.
The Purpose of This Live Stream
The purpose of deconstructing the 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 scorecards is to assess if the Chocolate Scorecard meets its self-imposed obligation to give consumers the information they need – clearly, accurately, and completely – so they can confidently they are making good decisions.
By extension viewers will be better equipped to look at other, similar, projects and assess them with more critical eyes.
In the end, it is up to individuals to decide what to do with the information and whether to trust it. I will be sharing my process for looking at the reports of projects like this.
- What do I look for?
- What questions do I want to ask?
- Are there any holes in the information?
- Is the way the results are presented help or hinder understanding?
