Episode Overview

The idea for this episode stems from a question I asked a colleague over the weekend, “Who is the most influential person or company in the modern craft chocolate movement?”

Obvious key historical influences in the chocolate lineage include the Van Houtens in The Netherlands, the Fry/Cadbury/Rowntree families in the UK, Henri Nestlé (with Daniel Peter) and Rodolphe Lindt in Switzerland, and Milton Hershey here in the UK.

But when it comes to the world of the modern craft chocolate – who are the key influences? The follow on idea is to explore if (and if so, how) these influences have had a positive and negative effect on the modern craft chocolate movement.

For the purposes of this episode, I am using the following etymology for orthodox: “from Late Latin orthodoxus, from Greek orthodoxos ‘having the right opinion,’ from orthos ‘right, true, straight’ (see ortho-) + doxa ‘opinion, praise’”.

And do they matter? Is an unexamined ChocolateLife worth living?
