Episode 125 Overview
I first visited Brazil in 2017, spending a short time in São Paulo before traveling to Ilhéus for the Chocolat Bahia festival.
I still have a valid – through October, 2027 – business visa, and I am hoping to return before it expires. (Nudge nudge wink wink.)
In all, I have visited Brazil a total of four times. Twice in 2022 (Pará during one trip; Ilhéus and SP the other) and in 2020 (SP), catching one of the last flights out of Guarulhos before the border closed.
Some photographs from my trip in 2017, with links to other posts.
During those visits, and at festivals in the US (NYC, Seattle) and Europe (Paris, Porto), I have had the great good fortune to meet with many members of the chocolate community, especially the Brazilian bean-to-bar community, which is incredibly vibrant.
Brazil’s past and present, with respect to cacau and chocolate culture, are very different from its neighbors in South America, and the differences, I suspect, are not wholly due to language, but to a wide range of other influences both internal and international.
